Cold Brew

When the weather warms, a hot cup of joe can be too much. Iced coffee is a refreshing alternative, but as it melts, it makes a pretty watery drink. And so, the most recently popularized chilled caffeine is cold brew coffee

Also called cold water extraction or pressing, no heat is needed for a cold brew coffee recipe.  With a small contraption to drip the coffee or a simple mix and strain process, you only need coffee and water.

Purified water with an especially coarse grind makes a clean, crisp cold brew coffee. Everyone should find their own perfect ratio in how to make cold brew coffee, but somewhere around 1:4 coffee to water is standard. It’s normally stronger than other brews or even espresso.

When water brews without heat, it doesn’t pull oils from the beans. Cold brew is gentle on your gut since acids are inside these oils. The chilled option comes out smooth and almost sweet. Caffeine is still pulled out of the coffee, of course, but some bitter, sour, and even floral flavors are left behind.

Finally, how to make cold brew coffee:

  1. Grind coffee coarsely
  2. Combine with water
  3. Steep (12 to 24 hours)
  4. Strain
  5. Either warm or enjoy chilled!

Your drink should keep in the fridge for 2 to 7 days. Remember, add your cream, sugar, and extra ice to make your cold brew with an extra zing of icy joy!
